Skimming old ceilings
When skimming old ceilings it’s important to make sure the ceiling is not too porous. The way I would overcome this problem is to use PVA glue. The importance of the glue is one to ensure the glue is mixed correctly and two that you don’t apply to much too soon. As you apply the plaster the glue must be tacky.
When skimming new walls or ceilings it’s important to use scrim tape on the joints. This helps to prevent cracks in the finished plaster. I also like to PVA any joints that have been cut with a blade, especially if there is a little gap.
These are just a few of the main points that are required when undertaking skimming, of course there are many more.
